Retellings | During the Fall of 2019 Thaïs made weekly ink sketches on glassine sheets. They were based on the amalgamation of thoughts, both contemplative and reactive, which can surface while working in the studio. The artist revisited these pieces with acrylic, ink, and crayon several times, with the paradoxical intent to interact with the familiar sketch as unknown objects.
At the paper making studio, Thaïs submerged her sketches between two sheets of fiber pulp which were then pressed and dried into the final papery sandwich... This process of transforming with paint, crayon and ink, while masking with pulp layering was an experiment in sequencing creative and process choices in order to contextualize subject matter.
Thaïs tried to recreate, in an accelerated manner, the loss and evolution of meaning over time which results in something old and new, impotent yet evocative, akin to urban evolution. What remains is an intimate documentation of her touch.
