Retellings Series, 2019
The retelling series is composed of partially excavated ink drawings, hidden under a layer of disrupted paper fiber. The drawings, combining naive linework with material explorations, are snapshots of Thaïs's time living in Chicago, a visual record of her processing visceral, sensory experiences of the city. In the papermaking studio, the physical act of sheet pulling, shaping, and pressing, grounds these records of overstimulation, containing them within the human proportions of a hand, reaching an arm's length across the papermaking mold to scrape away a layer of obscuring fiber.
