Thais Calvarin is an artist and educator with a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Since graduating in 2019, she has focused on the craft and artistry of papermaking, first at Hook Pottery Paper, IN in 2020, 2021 and 2022, and then at the Women's Studio Workshop, NY from 2022-2024. In 2024, Thais was assistant studio manager for Women Studio Workshop where she helped edition intricate artist books, assisted residents in the papermaking studio, and taught and facilitated papermaking workshops.
In her own work Thais allows the rhythms and restrictions of a process to guide composition, creating a dynamic relationship between materiality and imagery. In recent years, she has played with different ways of relating color and pigmentation to the papermaking process and has been making work inspired by the turbulent space between land and sea.
